Biographical/Historical note
In 1922 the City of Santa Barbara made the decision to abandon the then 47 year old building they were using as a City Hall
and construct a new building. The architectural firm of Sauter and Lockard was chosen to design a new City Hall building that
could accommodate more people and house more city departments. Construction started in 1922 and the new City Hall building,
located within Plaza de la Guerra, opened its doors in 1924.
The firm Sauter and Lockard was composed of architects Roland F. Sauter and E. Keith Lockard and was based in Santa Barbara,
California during the 1920s.
Scope and Content note
The Sauter and Lockard drawings of City Hall span 3 linear feet and date circa 1922. The collection consists of six architectural
drawings in the form of reprographic copies. Drawings include: plot plan, floor plans, details, sections, and a heating layout
for the basement.
