Abstract: This collection is primarily composed of materials amassed by water conservationist Bill “Woody” Woodworth, during his more
than thirty years of public advocacy, from the 1970s through 2002. Materials include reports, clippings, publications, and
subject files, predominantly related to Woodworth's research on water use and conservation on the Monterey Peninsula and his
work as a board member of the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District (1978-1983). Also included are materials related
to reuse planning of the former Fort Ord military base (1990-2002).

Bill "Woody" Woodworth was born in 1918 in Syracuse, New York. Woodworth was a career Air Force meteorologist, arriving in
Pacific Grove, California in 1963. After retiring from the Air Force in the early 1970s, Woodworth took on a public role as
an advocate for water conservation and became a major proponent of micro-solutions to water issues rather than reliance on
major dams or other costly infrastructure. He promoted residential and municipal cisterns, conservation, and reuse. Woodworth
served as Monterey Peninsula Water Management District board member from 1978-1983. During his tenure on the Monterey Peninsula
Water Management District, Woodworth contributed his knowledge of cisterns to a booklet, called “Captured Rainfall,” which
was published in 1981 by the state Department of Water Resources. Woodworth was also involved in the Fort Ord reuse project,
providing input on issues concerning water. Woodworth died on October 10, 2005 at the age of 87.

Post-receipt appraisal and minimal processing of materials by repository staff in December 2017 resulted in approximately
120 linear feet of non-substantive materials, binders and magazine files being separated and discarded.
