Abstract: Audiovisual materials, pamphlets, brochures, correspondence and ephemera related to
AIDS
education in Catholic schools and parishes collected by Father Rodney J. De Martini, a Catholic priest from San Francisco,
California who was also a vocal
AIDS
educator and lobbyist. The collection also includes training materials, self-published prayers and liturgies, and personal
notes belonging to De Martini, as well as transcripts of speeches given by Father De Martini, who successfully lobbied the
National Catholic Educational Association to include
AIDS
education in its elementary and secondary school curriculum.
Condition Description: Condition of AV material requires further processing to determine, but all other materials appear to be in good condition.

Biographical / Historical
Father Rodney J. De Martini is a Catholic priest and
AIDS
advocate and educator born in San Francisco, CA in 1947. He holds Masters degrees in both Liturgical Studies and Counseling
Psychology, and served as Director of
AIDS
Education for the Archdiocese of San Francisco and was one of the founders and also served as Director of the National Catholic
AIDS
Network (NCAN). He is the author of a 2005 book of prayers for the sick.
A vocal advocate for compassionate care and for
AIDS
education in Catholic schools, De Martini was also an advocate for the efficacy of condoms in
AIDS
prevention - a controversial stance in religious communities. He successfully lobbied the National Catholic Educational Association
to include
AIDS
education in its elementary and secondary school curriculum, and this collection contains a variety of pamphlets, ephemera,
and VHS tapes related to this cause, and to others that De Martini was passionate about. He currently serves as President
of the Board of Directors of the Food for Thought food bank in Sonoma, CA.
