    Scope and Content of Collection

This collection contains a folder of San Franciscan Ellen Schaefer’s correspondence with State Senator Jackie Speier, regarding the case and settlement of property tax discrimination against same-sex couples. In 2000, Schaefer mourned the loss of her partner of 30 years, Lucien McGuire, while realizing that the change in home ownership permitted a reappraisal, which increased her annual property taxes immensely. After hearing from Schaefer, Senator Speier proposed a property fairness tax amendment to protect non-traditional families from unfair property tax reassessments in 2002. This collection also includes news clippings, research notes, and a floppy disk.
