Background
Shirley Walker (1945-2006) was an American film and television composer and conductor and was a pioneer for women in the film
industry. Walker was a piano soloist with the San Francisco Symphony while in high school and went on to attend San Francisco
State University on a piano scholarship. She studied composition with Roger Nixon and piano studies with Harold Logan. Walker
began her career composing industrial films and commercial jingles then broke into the film business by playing synthesizer
on Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now (1979).
