    Abstract: The Arabian Horse Association of Southern California (AHASC) was founded in 1944 to promote the Arabian horse breed, educate owners on proper care, and to study the history and characteristics of Arabian horses. The collection contains administrative records that document the operation of the club, club newsletters, programs for horse shows organized by the club, and audiovisual recordings of horse shows.

    Biographical / Historical

    The Arabian Horse Association of Southern California (AHASC) was founded in 1944 under the initial name Arabian Horse Breeders' Society of California by Joanna Phillips of Glendale, California. The group was formed to promote the Arabian breed, educate owners on proper care, and study the history and characteristics of Arabian horses. Phillips served as the group's first secretary and treasurer and R. Warren Phillips served as the first president. The name was officially changed to Arabian Horse Association of Southern California in 1950.
    The AHASC held its first annual Fall Arabian Horse Show in 1945 in Flintridge, California. The show continues to be held every year in Santa Barbara, California.

    Scope and Contents

    The collection contains administrative records that document the operation of the Arabian Horse Association of Southern California (AHASC), including financial records, meeting minutes, membership directories and lists; newsletters published by the AHASC to promote their activities; programs for horse shows organized by the AHASC, including the Annual All-Arabian Horse Show that has gone on continuously since 1944; and film recordings of two of the Annual All-Arabian Horse Shows.

    The collection is organized into the following series: Series 1. Administrative Records; Series 2. Newsletters; Series 3. Horse Show Programs; and Series 4. Audiovisual Materials.
