Biography
William Rex Riedel (b. 1927) is a micropaleontologist from Tanunda, South Australia. He was educated at the University of
Adelaide, where he received his B.Sc. (1947), M.Sc. (1952) and D.Sc. (1976). Riedel began his decades-long career at the Scripps
Institution of Oceanography (SIO) in 1951 as a graduate research geologist. He was appointed Senior Lecturer in 1981. Riedel
is distinguished for his work on taxonomy and stratigraphy of Radiolaria and marine sediments. He participated in many SIO
expeditions, including Northern Holiday (1951) and the Argentine Antarctic Expedition (1956-57). Riedel’s work on stratigraphy
and on the analysis of sediment cores was especially important to the Deep Sea Drilling Program (DSDP). He was active on the
JOIDES Planning Committee, and later served as chair of the SIO Geological Research Division from 1978-1983. Riedel was named
curator of DSDP cores and served on the JOIDES Information Handling Panel beginning in 1990. He was a founder of EURORAD (later
INTERRAD), the international community of radiolarian workers. Riedel retired in 2001.
