Description
The Bhanu Athaiya material spans the years 1967-2012 (bulk 1980-1983) and encompasses 1.8 linear feet.
The collection includes call sheets, schedules, and other production materials for GANDHI (1982) as well
as Indian newspaper clippings on the film's initial reception and path through awards season.
Correspondence, clippings, and other miscellaneous materials document Athaiya's lengthy career as a
costume designer in Indian cinema, which has also garnered her two National Film Awards of India, in 1991
and 2002.
Background
Bhanu Athaiya is an Indian costume designer. Her Academy Award for costume design for Richard
Attenborough's GANDHI (1982) made her the first Indian and the only Indian woman to earn an Oscar. In
2012 she returned her Oscar statuette to the Academy and donated archival material related to GANDHI.
