Background

Scope and content:

Collection consists of the Pasadena Audubon Society's Board Meeting minutes, various administrative records, and general correspondence. It also includes multiple decades of issues of the society's newsletter "The Wrentit."

Biographical / historical:

The Pasadena Audubon Society was founded in 1904 by a group of people dedicated to preserving local bird populations. Birds were a diverse and plentiful commodity in the Pasadena foothills during the late 1800s/early 1900s. It was common to see people arrive in wagons and shoot birds, throw them into the wagons and return to town to sell them. Concerned citizens of Pasadena realized that if the practice continued, the number of birds would decline until there would be few birds to see, hear or enjoy. The Pasadena Audubon Society is the oldest Audubon chapter in California, celebrating its centennial in 2004. As it has grown to over 1,000 members, it continues to support its mission β€œTo bring the excitement of birds to our community through birding, education and conservation of birding habitat.”
