Abstract: The YMCA or Young Men’s Christian Association, was reestablished on January 12, 1952 in Escondido California after being disbanded
for unknown reasons in 1941. It is unclear when the “Y” organization began in Escondido, but Escondido’s so-called “Hi-Y”
club was the first in San Diego County. The group was made up of high school students, particularly at Escondido Union high
school. Though the “Y” organization is a church affiliate, the clubs contained “members of all races and religions” (Times-Advocate,
January 29, 1955).

Acquisition Information
This collection was donated on May 28, 2019 by Tania Amaral on behalf of Susie Black of the YMCA. The large scrapbook pages
included newspaper clippings and photographs, as well as a poster with photographs. The scrapbook, along with all photographs
have been digitized as of July 2019.
Biography/Administrative History
This collection came to the Pioneer Room as large scrapbook sheets and a poster with the photographs affixed to the scrapbook
pages by photo corners, adhesive tapes, and glues. Some photographs show signs of fading or poor quality. Others are damaged
by cutting, bending, tearing, and wrinkling. Many photographs are curled from humidity issues and other temperature changes.
The archivist determined that due to the newspaper clippings, and adhesive damage, and because the clippings are located elsewhere
in the Pioneer Room collections (DigitalReel), the scrapbook should be digitized to preserve its original order, photographs
should be removed from the scrapbooks pages, digitized, and preserved in an archival storage container.
