Scope and content:

One album, engraved on cover "Messages of Appreciation," containing materials commemorating the life of Frank E. Batturs, who died in Washington, D.C. on December 7, 1922 at the age of 52. Mr. Batturs was an Assistant Passenger Traffic Agent for the Southern Pacific Company, with 35 years of service. The album contains letters, clippings, telegrams, a photograph of Mr. Batturs, and other documents. Representatives from the major North American railroads sent letters of condolence and remembrance.

Biographical / historical:

Frank Earle Batturs was born in San Francisco, California on August 27, 1870, to Edward T. and Hannah Josephine Batturs (1843-1879).

In approximately, 1891, Butters married Pauline. Batturs suddenly passed away on December 7, 1922, in the Washington Hotel in Washington, DC where he was testifying before the Interstate Commerce Commission in the contest being carried on by the Southern Pacific against the Southern Pacific-Central Pacific unmerger order. At the time of his death, Batturs was the Assistant Department Manager for Southern Pacific Company and had been with the Southern Pacific for 36 years, entering service in 1886 as an office boy.

In February 1904, he was promoted to the position of general passenger agent at New Orleans. In January 1905, he was promoted to the position of general passenger agent at New Orleans, remaining in that county until January 1, 1909, when he was transferred to San Francisco as assistant general passenger agent as Los Angeles and on April 1, 1915, transferred to San Francsico in the same role. On September 1, 1918, he was appointed assistant passenger traffic manager for the Southern Pacific Company, the Western Pacific and the Deep Creek and Tidewater Southern Railroads. At the close of federal control, he was appointed assistant passenger traffic manager for the Southern pacific Company, the position he held at the time of his death. In 1909 he was transferred to San Francisco as assistant general passenger agent.

He was a member of the Bohemian Club and the San Francisco Commercial Club.
