Compositions, arrangements and performances

Scope and Content

The Compositions series contains published and unpublished scores, sketches, notes, and recordings, of and about Ingolf Dahl's chamber, piano, vocal, and orchestral composition and arrangements. In addition to completed compositions, this series also contains (mostly unidentified) sketches; Dahl's working notebooks; arrangements of works by other composers; and recordings of Dahl's conducting and performance appearances. Recordings of Dahl's own works are grouped with the scores and sketches. All of Dahl's published works are represented (as are some unpublished works). Not represented are Dahl's arrangements of Stravinsky's Danses Concertantes and Petite Suite, and Ives' Third Sonata. All unbracketed titles are Dahl's original folder/envelope titles.

Organization

This series has been organized into the following subseries: 1. Completed works; 2. Sketches; 3. Notebooks; 4. Recordings.

Completed works

Scope and Content

The Completed works subseries contains published scores, ozalid reproductions, notes, sketches, and recordings of all of Dahl's musical compositions, with the exception of Dahl's arrangements of Stravinsky's Danses Concertantes and Petite Suite, and Ives' Third Sonata.

Organization

This subseries has been organized by type of composition into five subseries: 1. Chamber works; 2. Piano pieces; 3. Orchestral and large ensemble works; 4. Vocal and choral works; 5. Arrangements.
All of the paper materials in these subseries were originally labeled by Dahl as either "[Name of composition]/scores/parts", "Finished sketches", "[Name of composition]/sketches", "Old compositions and first versions", or "All sketches 1940-1957", and housed in various locations throughout his original boxes. In order to facilitate access, the various versions of identified compositions have been housed and identified together, and arranged alphabetically within each subseries.
