Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of a handwritten manuscript of a "few personal recollections of Los Angeles, 50 years ago," written by Mrs. M.E. Williams from Santa Rosa, California. The "recollections," written in 1907 February, tell of Mrs. Williams' experiences in Los Angeles in 1856.

A typed copy of the manuscript, the original handwritten manuscript, title page, and an explanatory introduction by Grant Jackson are bound together. The introduction, dated 1924 August 28, describes how Jackson acquired the manuscript from Geneva R. Wheeler on that same day. Presumably, Jackson also created the typed copy of the manuscript.

Also attached is a letter from Wheeler to Jackson dated 1924 November 27.

Acquisition information:
Part of the Grant Jackson Memorial Library bequeathed to the Southwest Museum in 1925 April.
Custodial history:

Mrs. Williams wrote these notes in 1907 February to her sister. Williams's sister and Wiliams's daughter, Alice M. Williams, then forwarded the manuscript to the mother of Geneva R. Wheeler. Grant Jackson purchased the manuscripts from Geneva Wheeler and bound them in this volume in August of 1924. Jackson pasted in a letter Geneva Wheeler sent him in November of the same year explaining how she came to have these documents. This manuscript is part of the Grant Jackson Memorial Library bequeathed to the Southwest Museum in 1925 April.
