    The photograph was originally part of a larger gift to the Friends of the San Francisco Maritime Museum Library and given to the Park's library in 2005. The photograph was transferred as a field collection and accessioned into the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park museum collection in 2014.

    Historical or Biographical Note

    MARY E. FOSTER (built 1898; schooner, 4m) and ERIC (built 1898; schooner, 4m) were built by Hall Brothers in Port Blakely, Washington. TREMONT (built 1902; steamship) was renamed CRISTOBAL in 1909.

    Collection Scope and Content

    The Loading lumber in Tacoma, Washington photograph, 1902-1909, (SAFR 24428, P14-007) is comprised of a photograph of ERIC (built 1898; schooner, 4m), MARY E. FOSTER (built 1898; schooner, 4m), and TREMONT (built 1902; steamship) docked at a lumber wharf in Tacoma, Washington. The collection has been processed to the Collection level and is open for use.
    Contains a photograph (black-and-white photographic print, 7.5 x 9.5 in., mounted on a 9.25 x 11.25 in. board) of lumber loading activities on the waterfront of Tacoma, Washington, 1902-1909. A large quantity of lumber is stacked in the foreground with six men at work on the piles. MARY E. FOSTER (built 1898; schooner, 4m) of Honolulu, Hawaii, is on the right with her stern ports open. Two men are loading lumber through the ports. ERIC (built 1898; schooner, 4m) of San Francisco, California, is moored alongside MARY E. FOSTER, stern view, in the center of the photograph. TREMONT (built 1902; steamship) of Boston, Massachusetts, is moored on the left, port broadside view from stern to amidships.
    The photographer is not identified. Photographer number 11833 is written in the lower right corner of the photograph. "Waterfront Loading Lumber. Tacoma Washington" is handwritten on the board.
