Background

Scope and content:

The CELILO (built 1915; steam schooner) logbooks (SAFR 14312, HDC 104) is comprised of two logbooks belonging to the mate and pilot house. Each logbook records voyages from 1920-1921 and 1938. The collection has been processed to the collection level and is open to use without restrictions.

The mate's logbook covers the period of December 3, 1920 to April 5, 1921 and is for voyages 139-146. It records time, name of headland or place, compass reading, distance, winds, weather, remarks, etc. Trips for these voyages were among San Francisco, Portland, and St. Helens.

The pilot house logbook records the same kinds of information as the mate's for voyages 44-56, April 13 to August 25, 1938. Trips are among San Francisco, Alameda, and Los Angeles. A. Abbors is master.

Biographical / historical:

CELILO (built 1915; steam schooner) was operated by the McCormack Steamship Company. In the early 1920s, she and her sister ship, the WAPAMA were sold when the McCormack fleet all went steel. CELILO ended up as wreckage lying on a deserted island in Suisun Bay, and was burned by vandals on the eve of an expedition to salvage materials.
