Vessel History: This vessel was built in 1921 by Kiangnan Shanghai for the U.S. Shipping Board and named CELESTIAL. In 1922, the Dollar Steamship Lines purchased the vessel and renamed her MARGARET DOLLAR. In 1936, she was purchased by American-Hawaiian and renamed ARKANSAN. On June 16, 1942, ARKANSAN (commanded by Captain Paul R. Jones) was torpedoed by German submarine U-126 (commanded by Captain Ernst Bauer) and sunk off Grenada in the Southeastern Caribbean.
