    Scope and Contents

This collection consists of the pamphlets, press releases, reports, and communiqués related to the Angolan War of Independence compiled by University of California, Riverside Political Science professor emeritus Ronald H. Chilcote.
Additional materials on Cabo Verde and Guiné-Bissau are incorporated in the collection focused on the writings of Amílcar Cabral: The Ronald H. Chilcote Collection on Latin America at the University of California, Riverside's Special Collections

    Biographical / Historical

The materials in this collection were assembled primarily between 1959 and 1968 with the help of the many individuals associated with and interested in the revolutionary struggles in the Portuguese colonies in Africa. Chilcote conducted research in Portugal during 1960 and 1961, and in Brazil during 1964, and extensive travels throughout Africa in 1965. Prior to independence, most documentation appears in Portuguese reports that describe colonial administration and military efforts to contain African resistance. Chilcote's intention is to "provide a historical foundation for understanding African perspectives of the struggle".
