    Processing Note

The photographs in this collection (P83-019a) were originally part of a very large collection of Walter A. Scott photographs, which were acquired by the San Francisco Maritime Museum at some point between the early days of the museum in the mid-1950s to the early 1960s. In the mid-1960s, a large portion of the Scott collection was selected for cataloging. These images are now part of the Classified photograph collection. An index of this collection is currently only accessible to Park staff through the ICMS Archives Module Classified photographs directory. It is also accessible by staff through the card index (by vessel name) and the card catalog (by vessel name, other subjects, and photographer's name). The material cataloged in the mid-1960s was roughly half of yachting scenes and half of other commercial work, primarily of passenger vessels and freighters. The bulk of the remainder of the Scott collection is described here, in P83-019a; however, there are several other small Scott collections (see the Related Materials section).
Generally, it seems that the photographs in P83-019a and in the Classified photograph collection are each unique and complement each other with very little duplication (based on looking at PRESIDENT WILSON negatives in P83-019a and in the Classified photograph collection). In a few cases, there is a negative in the Classified photograph collection and a corresponding print in P83-019a. There are also photograph albums in another collection (SAFR 15240, P79-040a (SCR 32a-d)) that contain prints made from many of the negatives in P83-019a.
The glass plates in this collection (P83-019a) roughly begin with some dating from 1900 and 1905, but increase in frequency per year from 1910 (when he became a commercial photographer), through 1925-1926, when he shifted from glass to film. The images on film begin in 1926, and run through 1935, with the last few in 1938.
The photographer numbers in this collection are generally in the range of 1-1200 and 2000-3000, with some early 4000 numbers as well. The Walter A. Scott photographs that were cataloged into the Classified photograph collection seem to generally be in the early number range of 1-1100 and in the 5000-6000 range; they also tend to have more steam powered vessels, but there are also sailing vessels included in the Classified collection.
Scott's system for numbering his negatives cannot be described with certainty, since no index came with the collection, nor do we have long continuous sequences of numbers. At least two persons, to judge by the handwriting, were involved in assigning photographer numbers to the negatives.
In a general way, it appears that as some point Scott arranged his images of sailing yachts alphabetically by the name of the vessel (but not necessarily chronologically under each name) and numbered them (roughly photographer numbers 52 through 911, in this collection), mostly 6.5 x 8.5 inch glass plates, but some other size plates as well. He then apparently continued the number series (starting around photographer number 1006, in this collection), for the balance of the 4 x 5 inch glass plates, ending in the mid 1200s. However, he did not assign numbers to images of powered vessels or other subjects in these sizes, except where he had taken, under commission, a number of views and had numbered these as independent sets.
For his 5 x 7 inch glass plates, he appears to have begun with photographer number 2000 and to have continued with this sequence when he switched to nitrate film negatives (beginning with number 2296), passing 3000 at the end, with a few numbered in the 4000s and two images in the 5000s. In this sequence, he did include images of powered vessels.
While it is assumed that most of the photographs in this collection were taken by Walter A. Scott, there are a few photographs of photographs in the collection that were presumably originally taken by other photographers. For example, A.E. Wells (Item 848), Ingram of Long Beach, California (Items 838, 840) and Winter & Pond (Item 1609). In the scope note for the Walter A. Scott photographs (SAFR 19479, P78-436a), it is noted that "In addition to his own photographs, Mr. Scott acquired the photographs of T.H. Wilton and reproduced them for his own catalog of images." It is entirely possible that some of the photographs in this collection (P83-019a) are also Thomas H. Wilton photographs. Wilton was one of the foremost maritime photographers in the late 19th/early 20th century and was the proprietor of the Elite Studio. According to the SFMM Accession ledgers (406/1), Mr. Wilton was a sea captain on coastal schooners before 1870. There are also photographs of paintings and information about the original painter has been noted at the Item level, when known. Walter A. Scott was a member of the California Camera Club, and it is possible that some of the prints could be from other members of the club, though this could not be verified.
In 1984, it appears that SAFR staff arranged the photographs by physical type (roughly) and assigned Item numbers to the photographs. The nitrate negatives were numbered first, then glass, then prints. See the arrangement notes for more detail. The photographer numbers are not in order within each of the physical types or across all types.
Each photographic image has been assigned an Item number; there are often multiple physical forms of each image (e.g. a nitrate negative, a contact interpositive and a contact negative) which has been noted in the physical description field. SAFR staff created most of the contact interpositives and contact negatives in the mid-1980s and early 1990s.
    In the Fall of 2013, SAFR Archivist Taylor Horton moved the following 104 nitrate negatives from the Nitrate Discard box to regular nitrate storage, because he felt that their condition was not poor enough to warrant destruction: 64; 65; 68; 113; 116; 120; 290; 299-307; 313-318; 320; 326; 328; 330; 339-344; 347; 349; 353; 354; 382; 386; 393; 407; 411; 415; 416; 421; 424; 436; 447; 452; 467; 468; 476; 478; 481; 483; 486; 488-500; 527; 530; 532-534; 536; 538; 539; 541; 549; 558; 560; 562; 569; 579; 581; 585-587; 590; 595-602; 629; 699; 802; 808; 831; 832; 847.1; 847.2.
When SAFR staff member Richard Tooker processed the collection in 1984, he noted that: "Only about one-third of the images now listed were identified by name. The majority of the negatives are numbered, but by no means at all." When staff members re-processed the collection in 2014, they were able to identify many of the "unidentified" vessels by using the numbers and letters visible on their sails and by the names on their hulls. They also intellectually arranged the photographs into Series and File Units by vessel type and subject matter.
Description Notes: Dates refer to when the original photograph was taken unless otherwise noted. Some of the photographic prints and negatives in this collection are copies that were made much later than when the original photograph was taken, and the dates of these reproductions were noted when known.
Note that any original enclosures that the Items were housed in at the time of donation are no longer with the collection, with the exception of one box which is now stored with the glass plate negatives in Box 49. Some dates for individual Items were derived from inscriptions on the Items themselves (either handwritten or etched onto the Item). Other dates were derived from notations on the original discarded enclosures, and the remaining dates were determined based on evaluations from previous staff members; however, there is no way to verify which method was used, and therefore some dates may be incorrect.

SAFR-00001 is a blanket accession that was transferred from the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) to the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park in September 1988. GGNRA had previously acquired the collection from the San Francisco Maritime Museum when it became a unit of the National Park Service in 1977.
GOGA-00789 was transferred from the J. Porter Shaw Library to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) in February 1985.
It is unknown who donated these photographs to the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, but they were acquired prior to the mid-1960s.

    Historical or Biographical Note

Walter A. Scott (1864-1957) was a California photographer from the 1900s-1930s. He worked professionally from 1910-1940s and primarily took photographs of yachts and other vessels in the San Francisco Bay.
Walter Amos Scott was born in Niles, California, on September 28, 1864, to Eleanor Bein McKay Scott (1819-1894) and Captain Caleb Cook Scott (1813-1898). Eleanor and Caleb were both born in Nova Scotia, Canada, and his father was a mariner for many years. In the early 1860s, Caleb and Eleanor settled in the San Francisco Bay Area alongside the Alameda Creek near Niles [now known as Fremont], in a house he named "Mizzentop" (SFMM Accession Ledger).
Walter did not go to sea like his father. He attended Boy's High School briefly and was an "outstanding middle distance runner" (SFMM). The 1889 University of California at Berkeley Blue and Gold yearbook lists Scott as a member of the Olympic Athletic Club, and he was later a member of the Athlete's Association. According to the biography in the SFMM Accession Ledger, Walter joined Baker & Hamilton as a secretary and was later a court recorder. He then went into business in San Francisco, handling typewriters and office supplies from at least 1896-1909 (earlier years not verified). He had his own businesses and also worked for other companies at this time.
From 1896-1899, Walter and Lewis M. Bannan owned a typewriter and supply business named Scott & Bannan, located at 331 and 333 Montgomery Street in San Francisco. In 1899, only Walter's name was listed under Scott & Bannan and it appears he might have run it this year on his own. In 1900, Walter was listed as a general agent for Columbia Bar-Lock Typewriter, typewriters and supplies and cameras, at 325 Montgomery Street, Rooms 7-8, San Francisco. From 1901-1905, Walter was Manager of The Columbia Typewriter Manufacturing Co.; from 1901-1903 the address was 319 California Street, San Francisco; from 1904-1905 the address was 207 Montgomery Street, San Francisco. From 1906-1907, it appears that he had his own business selling "typewriters, desks, office supplies" and he was also an agent for Columbia Visible Typewriters at 1811 Fillmore Street and 523 Market Street, San Francisco. He had his own business at 517 Market Street, San Francisco (1908) and at 531 Market Street, San Francisco (1909).
Scott's interest in photography increased after the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake (SFMM Accession Ledger). Walter was a prolific amateur photographer until 1910, when he made the shift to commercial photography (San Francisco City Directories for 1909, 1910). He had photograph studios in three different San Francisco locations throughout the years, including 558 Market Street (1910-1916), 583 Market Street (1917-1936), and 55 Stevenson Street (1937-1941). In the September 1941 issue of Camera Craft, Walter A. Scott listed many cameras and photograph equipment for sale at his 55 Stevenson Street studio, and it appears that he was downsizing. From 1942-1946, he was listed as a commercial photographer at his home address, 1234 10th Avenue, San Francisco.
In addition to his commercial business, Walter A. Scott was involved in photography associations: the California Camera Club of San Francisco and the Photographers' Association of America. On April 12, 1909, he was elected the President of the California Camera Club in San Francisco (Photographic Times). He was also Treasurer for the Photographers' Association of America from 1922-1923 (Camera Craft, Vol. 29; Camera Craft, Vol. 30).
In 1886, Walter married Jennie Ann Bannon (October 19, 1864-June 16, 1940) (her name has also been seen spelled as Jenny Ann Brannon and Brannan). They had two children together: Walter George Scott (October 31, 1895-September 20, 1951) and Lloyd Allan Scott (April 4, 1901-January 9, 1979). Walter George worked for C & H Sugar Refinery in Crockett, California, from at least 1917-1920, and at the S & T Photographic printing and developing shop at 562 Market Street, San Francisco, from 1930, 1937-1940 (years outside these ranges have not been verified) (WWI Draft card; 1920 census; Crocker-Langley San Francisco City Directories). He was married to Betty Meyrs and they had a son named Walter A. Scott, Jr. (September 29, 1916-January 9, 2000). Walter A. Scott, Jr. lived with his grandparents in San Francisco from 1937-1940 (Crocker-Langley, 1937-1940). Walter and Jennie's other son Lloyd Allan Scott worked as a Master for Matson Steamship Company for 50 years and also as a furniture handler. He married Virginia D. (Sutton?) (1905-1975) in the 1920s and it does not appear that they had any children.
Walter was a Mason and member of California Lodge No. 1, F. & A.M., in San Francisco. Walter lived in San Francisco for most of his life at the following addresses: 2210 Steiner, San Francisco (1886); 2532 McAllister, San Francisco (1896-1897); and 1234 10th Avenue, San Francisco (1898-1946).
Mr. Scott died at the age of 93 in Novato, California, on October 2, 1957. He was laid to rest in Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma, California. Walter A. Scott was survived by his son Lloyd Allan Scott, grandson Walter Amos Scott, Jr., and great grandchildren Lois and Donna Scott.
Other potential information about Scott: Some sources say that for a short period of time Scott attended the University of California at Berkeley, although this could not be confirmed in any of their yearbooks for the years 1878-1888, 1890-1899. However, there was a Walter A. Scott listed in the 1889 Blue and Gold yearbook as competing athletically as part of the Olympic Athletic Club, which is true according to the biography in the SFMM Accession Ledger.
Walter Scott's family information: Walter A. Scott's parents were Eleanor Bein McKay Scott (1819-1894) and Captain Caleb Cook Scott (1813-1898). Eleanor and Caleb were both born in Nova Scotia, Canada; Caleb was born in Yarmouth and Eleanor was born in Pictou. According to the biography in the SFMM Accession Ledger, Caleb was master of the British barkentine EMPRESS, which was later made into a grain barge in San Francisco. In 1861, Caleb sailed from Yarmouth to Boston, Massachusetts, aboard the schooner EAGLE. Caleb "sailed his way around the Horn of Magellan in South America on his way to a new life in the [San Francisco] Bay Area, and settled alongside the Alameda creek near Niles" (City of Fremont's website). He was naturalized on June 24, 1867.
Caleb and Eleanor lived in the Washington Township, Alvarado Precinct, and Caleb was a farmer from at least 1867-1894 (later dates not confirmed). Caleb was listed as a farmer on the 1860, 1870 and 1880 U.S. Censuses and the 1894 Oakland City Directory. Eleanor died in 1894. From 1896-1897, Caleb lived in San Francisco with his son Walter at 2532 McAllister Street. The 1896 California Voter Register indicates that Caleb was missing his left leg at this time. Caleb died in 1898. Eleanor and Caleb are buried in the Centerville Pioneer Cemetery in Fremont, California.

    Collection Scope and Content

The Walter A. Scott photograph collection, 1877-1939, bulk circa 1900-1935, (SAFR 19105, P83-019a) is comprised mainly of images of pleasure yachts, both sail and power, underway in the San Francisco Bay, California. The collection has been processed to the Item level and is open for use.
Contains photographs of sailing yachts, power yachts and other vessels, 1877-1939, bulk circa 1900-1935. There are 2520 unique photographic images in 4331 physical forms (858 nitrate negatives, 895 contact interpositives, 869 contact negatives, 25 safety negatives, 1587 glass plate negatives, 3 glass plate positives, 4 lantern slides, 83 black-and-white photographic prints, and 7 postcards).
Approximately four-fifths of the collection is comprised of sailing yachts underway on San Francisco Bay, California; more specifically, a little over half of the collection contains images of sloops. There are many photographs of early sloops, yawls, and schooner yachts built near the turn of the 20th. There are M, N, Q, R, S, and X Class vessels represented as well as Bird Boats (a local San Francisco development in the 1920s) and some International Metre vessels (6m, 8m). There is also a photograph of a San Francisco Sea Scout sailing vessel in May 1932 (Item 738).
From about 1895-1908, Walter A. Scott's yachting photographs are primarily of various regattas. After he became a professional photographer in 1910, he took more commissioned shots of specific vessels, regattas, and other events throughout the yachting season. Many of these views were obviously commissioned by owners, as they are close up broadside views with people on board smiling at the photographer.
The locations of the images are mostly all in the San Francisco Bay " off Sausalito, Tiburon, Angel Island, Alcatraz, in front of Fort Mason, and the San Francisco waterfront. Some of the waterfront views show buildings from San Francisco's 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE). There are also a few views of Point Lobos, Lands End, Ocean Beach, San Francisco street scenes, and a trip to Point Reyes. There are additional photographs of Swanson's boatyard in Belvedere in 1912 (Items 2411, 2412) and Madden's Shipyard in Sausalito in August 1927 (Items 301, 306, 815).
The collection also includes photographs of merchant steamships and U.S. Army and Navy vessels as well as photographs of photographs and photographs of paintings of sailing ships. There are also a small number of photographs from the MADRONO (built 1884; polar exploration vessel) Arctic exploration trip in 1928.

    Collection Arrangement

Physical arrangement: The photographs in this collection appear to have been arranged and numbered by physical type (roughly): Nitrate negatives (Items 1-862); Glass plate negatives, 4 x 5 inches (Items 863-1196, 2512-2519); Glass plate negatives, 5 x 7 inches (Items 1197-1717); Glass plate negatives, 6.5 x 8.5 inches (Items 1752-2466, 2481, 2511); Glass plate negatives, 8 x 10 inches (Items 1816-1817, 2467-2480); Photographic prints (Items 1718-1723, 1749-1751, 2482-2510); Safety negatives (Items 1724-1748).
