Scope and content:

The Irene Poon photography archive consists of, photographic prints, negatives, contact sheets, slides, ephemera, research notes, correspondence, newspaper clippings and other materials.

A significant portion of the materials cover Leading the Way, a book and exhibition by Irene Poon about Asian American artists.

There are also photographic prints of San Francisco, including Chinatown, the Mission and street scenes.

Many of the prints are matted, some have captions on the back or front, and some also have prices listed on the back.

Biographical / historical:

Irene Poon Anderson was born in 1941 in San Francisco, California. She graduated from San Francisco State College (later San Francisco State University) with a Bachelor of Arts in Art in 1964 and a Master of Arts in Photography in 1967.

She worked at San Francisco State College School of Art as a visual resource librarian. She was also a photographer documenting daily life in San Francisco, particularly in Chinatown.

She was the curator for a number of exhibitions including at San Francisco State University and the Chinese Historical Society of America where she also served on the Board of Directors. Her photographs have been shown at museums and galleries, in a number of exhibitions including With New Eyes: Toward an Asian American Art History in the West, and Moving Pictures: the Photography of Irene Poon, 1960s to present. The With New Eyes exhibition later evolved into a book by Irene Poon, Leading the Way: Asian American Artists of the Older Generation.
