Scope and Contents
From note dated 1893 and signed by M. Alethia Hewitt written on inside front free endpaper: "The idea of requiring the child
to write the pattern of each article after she had learned to make the article occurred to me, from the fact so many pupils
would write to me for the pattern; as she had forgotten how it was made. In 1881, I commenced to require each girl to write
her own patterns and gave her this book at the close of school as her own property." Facing page inscribed "As taught by Mrs.
M.A. Hewitt 1887." Manuscript contains 35 leaves printed in Braille with directions for making 17 different kinds of lace
including: French Edge, Roman Edge, Spider-web Edgings, Point Lace, Shell Edge, Point Edge, Narrow Edge, Grecian Edge, Fan
Edge, Picot Edge, Fan Insertion, Southern Edge, Spider-web Insertion, Section for Pin Cushion, and Columbus Edge. A sample
of lace, pasted onto maroon paper backing, has been attached at the end of each set of directions.
