    Content Description

    Collection consists of nine manuscript documents, dated 1885-1889, related to the appointment and discharge of Israel Lawton as superintendent of the San Francisco Mint: a presidential certificate designating Lawton as superintendent (1885 June 18); a copy of an official bond (1886 September 3); a letter, from President Benjamin Harrison, discharging Lawton from his office (1889 June 20); three receipts issued by the superintendent's office to Lawton (all dated 1889 July 31); a statement of balances of bullion and coin (1889 July 31); a letter, from the Treasury Department to Lawton regarding the balancing of his account for ordinary expenses (1889 September 2); and undated affidavits of surety. Also includes 1 tintype photograph of Israel Lawton, taken in 1875 at Fire Island, New York.
