Writings 1940s-1970s, undated

Scope and Content

The Writing series includes the many handwritten or typewritten copies of Julius Berstl's plays and novels, particularly later ones, that he had kept. They were all found together in the original boxes, and have been alphabetized. Most of the copies, both typescripts and manuscripts, have handwritten edits added in by Berstl. While very few items in this series are dated, they are predominantly from Berstl's years in America; this places them in the 1950s-1970s. Sometimes there are other items that were originally found with the typescript or manuscript. In those cases, they have been kept together in the same folder. This series also features the typescripts and manuscripts of Berstl's plays, including some of his most famous, like "Dover-Calais" and "Chu the Sinner." These also often have extensive handwritten edits.

Within the Writing series there are also the Short Stories and Anecdotes and well as Other Writings. Within the former, there are a number of shorter forms of writing by Berstl, including notes on different writing projects, radio scripts, film scenarios, articles, and poems. In Other Writings, there are Berstl's German translations of a number of popular plays, as well as other people's writing about Berstl's works, such as reviews and publicity.

Novels

Scope and Content

The Novels subseries contains both typescripts and manuscripts of novels that were written by Julius Berstl. There are both carbon copies and originals, and most of them include many editing notes from Berstl, with new passages pasted in and others marked out. Some of the typescripts or manuscripts include the original covers used when Berstl would send the novels to publishers. In English and in German.

Correspondence 1901-1975

Scope and Content

Julius Berstl's correspondence has been divided up into Personal and Professional. The Personal Correspondence series includes letters to and from close friends, actors and actresses, people he knew from the theater, and fellow writers. While the letters sometimes discuss more professional topics, they have been placed under Personal because of their informal nature and because Berstl often knew these people personally. Personal Correspondence includes all topics and themes outside of the business side of Berstl's writing. The letters range from 1901-1975 and include picture postcards, both typewritten and handwritten notes, and discussions about writing, theater, and many more things.

The Professional Correspondence series contains letters that pertain to the business side of writing and theater; these are often typewritten, form based letters from publishers and theaters concerning Berstl's work. There are a great number of rejection letters from all the major publishers and theaters in both America and Germany, all of which Berstl had kept in a different box. These letters range from 1943-1975.

Every folder in both of these series has its own Scope and Contents note that gives an idea of all or at least a majority of the correspondence found within it, with individual dates and the key correspondents.

Personal Correspondence 1901-1975

Processing Information

In Box 18, folders 1-38 originally were all in a scrapbook, separated as they are now between different pages. Folders 39-52 were originally found in folders, separated as they are now. In both cases, the original groupings and separations of documents has been kept but just transferred to folders.

Some correspondence is also found in the Personal and Biographical Documents section, Box 23, Folders 1-5.

Scope and Content

The Personal Correspondence subseries contains letters to and from Julius Berstl that were not specifically related to the business side of writing or theater. His correspondence ranges from fellow writers, to actors and people from the theater, to close friends. The letters range in date from 1901 to the end of Berstl's life in 1975. Just as there is a wide scope of dates, there is also a number of different topics included in Berstl's personal correspondence; they include picture postcards from friends talking about travel, letters to other authors discussing writing, and many more.

These letters were mostly found together originally; a small number of other personal letters have been classified under Personal and Biographical Documents or Theater Memorabilia due to their different original location or theme. Individual folder-level Scope and Contents notes list the majority of letters found in each folder along with their dates and the people involved.

Professional Correspondence 1943-1975

Processing Information

In Box 17, folders 1-16 originally were all in a scrapbook. Folders 17-19 were originally all found in a box together. In both cases, the original groupings and separations of documents has been kept but just transferred to folders.

Scope and Content

The Professional Correspondence subseries contains letters to and from Julius Berstl that specifically relate to the business side of writing or theater. His correspondence ranges from publishers, to theaters, to film production companies, and more. The letters range in date from 1943 to the end of Berstl's life in 1975. A majority of the letters within the Profession Correspondence series relate to publishing. Berstl kept a box filled with rejection letters from publishers and theater companies that he received during the last few years of his life (1950s-1970s), which has been transferred to folders.

These letters were mostly found together originally; a small number of other professional letters have been classified under Personal and Biographical Documents or Theater Memorabilia due to their different original location or theme. Individual folder level Scope and Contents notes list the majority of letters found in each folder along with their dates and the people involved.

Personal and Biographical Documents 1858-2010, undated

Scope and Content

The Personal and Biographical Documents series features a wide range of documents. The biographical portion includes predominantly documents that relate to Berstl's life as a whole, including report cards, photograph albums, journals, and other notes. He collected articles, notes, and other information concerning his 70th, 75th, 80th, and 90th birthdays; they often feature a wealth of basic biographical facts.

Also included are documents that he had collected personally, which range from newspaper clippings he had collected, to recipe books, to his contracts when working in the theater. He has many documents concerning the Schreiner family; Franziska Schreiner was Julius Berstl's mother. Franziska and her mother and father all worked in the theater from the mid to late 1800s in Germany.

Within the Personal Documents series are a number of theater history related documents. The theater materials kept in Personal Documents are those that he likely inherited from a family member, whereas those in the Theater Memorabilia series are mostly documents that he had collected himself during his work in the theater. This is a general rule; sometimes materials were placed to keep them in the original placement or context.

These documents range in date from around 1858-1973.

There are a number of clippings from the newspaper of recipe ideas, particularly for meat loaf. There is a small book of recipes that highlights appetizers and beverages, as well as a small recipe book published by Campbell's telling how to cook with soup. The Literary Journals series includes a few issues of assorted literary journals that Julius Berstl had kept. They are all German language journals. Also in this series are a few travel maps that Berstl had put with the journals. The dates of the journals range from 1903-1968.

Scope and Content

These journals were found together. "Die Buhnengenossenschaft" is number 4, from April 1968. The article concerning Julius Berstl is on pages 126-127. The cover story is "Welterfolge der modernen Oper." "Welt und Wort" is number 4, from April 1967. The article concerning Julius Berstl is on page 143.

"Westermann," January 1968; "Die Schaubuhne," 6 June 1907; "Dichten und Trachten," 1966 1907-1968

Scope and Content

These journals were found together. "Westermann" is number 1, from January 1968. There are two copies of "Die Schaubuhne" from 1907 June 6. Julius Berstl's play "Die Witwe von Ephesus" is on pages 571-584. "Dichten und Trachten" is number 2 from 1966, featuring writing from Bertolt Brecht, T.S. Eliot, Hans Christoph Buch, and others.

Scope and Content

The journals and the maps were found together. There are three pull out travel maps in color. One is of the world from the Vacation Travel Club, one is of Germany from an ad for the German Counselor Offices, and the other is of the British Isles. "Das Magazin fur Litteratur" is from 1903 May 2. "Welt und Wort" has three different issues in this folder. In Number 11, November 1968, Berstl underlined an entry on page 382. In Number 3, March 1967, Berstl underlined three entries on page 107 and marked an entry on page 97, all with corresponding marks in the table of contents. In Number 12, December 1968, Berstl underlined an entry on page 427 and 428 each.

These journals were found together. There are two issues of "Westermanns Monatshefte." January 1926 features a story by Julius Berstl on pages 536-542 entitled, "Wodjanka." February 1926 features a story written by Julius Berstl on pages 593-612 entitled "Die Fahrt ins Rosenrote" (Part I).

These journals were found together. There are two issues of "Westermanns Monatshefte." March 1926 features a story by Julius Berstl on pages 1-18 entitled "Die Fahrt ins Rosenrote" (Part II). April 1926 features a story written by Julius Berstl on pages 117-135 entitled "Die Fahrt ins Rosenrote" (Part III). "Hessenland" is from 16 May 1902, and features a piece of poetry by Julius Berstl on page 135.
