Background

Scope and content:

These records document the actions of the Alumnae of the Sacred Heart of San Diego and the Associated Alumnae of the Sacred Heart. Included are planning materials and announcements for the AASH biennial conference held throughout the United States; administrative records for the San Diego chapter including constitution and by-law revisions, budget materials, membership data, and board meeting information; event planning materials; newspaper clippings largely covering events held at the San Diego College for Women; and newsletter publications related to the AASH. Among these materials are records documenting the close relationship between the University of San Diego and the Society of the Sacred Heart including the society's advisory involvement in the 1974 capital campaign for USD and documents about Mother Rosalie Clifton Hill, RSCJ. Also included are records of various AMASC (World Association of the Sacred Heart Alumnae) International Council Meetings. These meetings were held around the world including in Costa Rica, Japan and Italy. Records indicate that Sacred Heart Alumnae and University of San Diego staff members Virginia McMonagle and Sara Finn attended one or more of these meetings.

Biographical / historical:

The Alumnae of the Sacred Heart of San Diego is the San Diego chapter of the Associated Alumnae/i of the Sacred Heart (AASH). The AASH is an organization comprised of all alumni of schools conducted by the Religious of the Sacred Heart. The AASH aim is to “foster a spirit of unity and ongoing communication among alumnae/i.” The National chapter of the AASH was organized in 1930 by Sarah Chambers Polk, and alumna of Maryville College. The inaugural meeting was held in Saint Louis in 1933. As of 2016, the AASH is comprised of more than 40,000 women and men educated in Sacred Heart Schools. The San Diego chapter began as a way to connect alumni of the San Diego College for Women. It later expanded to include all alumni of Religious of the Sacred Heart schools living in San Diego.

The Religious of the Sacred Heart (RSCJ) are members of the Society of the Sacred Heart, an international congregation of Catholic women. Their mission centers on service and education, and thus they support Sacred Heart Schools throughout the world. The RSCJ first arrived on the west coast with a chapter in San Francisco. Among its prominent members was Mother Rosalie Clifton Hill, RSCJ who helped found the San Diego College for Women as one of the Sacred Heart schools.
