The bells consisted of 5, 7, 9, 11, and on rare occasions, 15 bells, but never 13. The largest bell is in the center, and there are two small ones on the outside. - T.O.M.

"It was intended to drive logs through the mouth of the river into the bay, and then drag them up the bank to the mill. This plan didn't pan out, so a tramway was built. There was no wharf or chute on the Point, the lumber, after being sawed, was hauled back on the tramway to the flat, and then lightered out to vessels lying in the harbor. The mill was used as a gang saw with twenty-eight saws."

Five schooners in port to load tanbark for Frank's Tannery in Redwood City, CA. The five schooners in view are listed as the SACRAMENTO (schooner, 2m), RALPH J. LONG (schooner, 2m), S. DANIELSON (schooner, 2m), BENDER BROS (schooner, 2m), and NETTIE SUNDBERG (schooner, 2m). However, one of the four latter may be the BEULAH (built 1882; schooner, 3m). Information written on the back of the print: "This type of small sailing schooner did most of the freighting of lumber, R.R. ties, split Redwood products, tan-bark, etc. on the Mendocino Coast - until the small steam schooners too over. First steam schooners started in the 1880's and the sailing schooners were all replaced by steam schooners by the end of the century (1899)."

Built by Krupps in Kiel, Germany in 1925 for a New York Millionaire, and named "Caritas". Sailed the seven seas, and guests aboard were Authors, Statesmen, and Royalty. Sir Tomas Lipton was a frequent visitor. In 1941 Uncle Sam bought and refitted her for the U.S. Navy, as the "U.S.S. Garnet". In 1946 her hull was bought by Mr. and Mrs. M.J. Sierka for a lounge, dining room, and headquarters for the best salmon, trout and steelhead fishing in the world. Cabins, trailer space, boats, tackle and guides are available.

COQUILLE RIVER was a wooden steam schooner built in 1896 at Prosper, Oregon by William Muller and C. Christensen. She weighed 415 tons and measured 141 long by 34 wide by 10 feet deep. With a 260 h.p. compound engine built by William Deacon Iron Works in San Francisco, she could carry 400,000 board feet of lumber. Owned first by Sudden & Christenson of San Francisco, COQUILLE RIVER was sold in 1905 to Swayne & Hoyt of San Francisco and in 1908 to National Steamship Company, owned by Union Lumber Company of Fort Bragg. In 1925, the ship was sold again to Russell J. Hubbard of Marshfield, Oregon and renamed WINCHESTER. She was eventually abandoned at Oakland Creek in Alameda in 1933.
