The DELTA QUEEN, which many a San Franciscan remembers as the scene of gay week ends, is being wrapped up for a long trip to the Mississippi. Captain Fred Way Jr. (right) stands at the wheel in the Fulton shipyards at Antioch where the wrapping is being done (below). The DELTA QUEEN has had a checkered career since she and her mate (DELTA KING) got started in Stockton 20 years ago. They were million-dollar babies, then, and were sold recently for about $50,000 apiece. The King went to the Chinese, for Yangtze service. The Greene Line Steamers, Cincinnati, got the Queen. Immediately before and during the war the King and Queen were everything from barracks to ferry boats around the Bay. Trucks had rendered them uneconomic as freight carriers in the '30s, but old-timers will never forget those over-night trips to Sacramento. World Wide Photo."

Caption: More than 6.5 million tons of sand is being barged to Stockton from the lower point of Grand Island, near Rio Vista, California, for the new Interstate 5. The mounds must "sit" and "compact" before they become useful. These barges may have to leave for a new assignment in Alaska soon, thus, sand is being stockpiled for future use. Since construction of the Peripheral Canal is simultaneous, economically enough, it is furnishing dirt in some areas for elevation of the multi-million dollar expressway. Here, the tugboat, Bannock works with one of the barges in the Stockton Deepwater Channel, California's first and largest inland deepwater seaport. San Joaquin County.

On the unconvincingly spacious and neat expanse of Front Street, drays, wagons, handsome turnouts, and individual riders do not interfere with a locomotive and train of cars of the Sacramento Valley Railroad or a company of drilling volunteers. The steamboats shown: YOUNG AMERICA, QUEEN CITY, and NEW WORLD, were all actual river traders. Lithograph published by Britton & Rey, San Francisco, n.d."

Tower Bridge with span raised to let bargeload of airplanes from McClellan Air Force Base go through. G - Jim Sadler 1/73.
Caption: Plastic "cocoons" are sprayed on A-1E's to protect them from erosion in salt water and air, before they are barged down the Sacramento River from McClellan Air Force Base to the Port of Oakland and then shipped to Southeast Asia. Heavily damaged Skyraiders are repaired immediately on location, while others are systematically and frequently flown in from various bases, regardless of war, for "staging-out." Dating back to the Korean War, the A-1's and A-1E's cannot be called obsolete. They provide the necessary and efficient low-level ground support in Vietnam. Here, the left span of the Tower Bridge, in Sacramento, California, yields to the military navigation which makes the Sacramento River unique.

Caption: Tower Park Marina is symbolized by a water tower stationed at the entrance. Water was pumped from Little Potato Slough into the tower for cleaning and processing island vegetables in one large warehouse. The produce was transported by 20,000 freight cars annually to canneries and markets. Fires partially destroyed the warehouse, leaving three separate warehouses. This boxcar city beyond the levee started at Terminous in 1927, by Western Pacific Railroad. Rail service disappeared in 1961, when Western Pacific was replaced by modern machinery and trucks. The area was nearly vacant until 1968, when it was purchased and converted in to a marina. A recreational vehicle park with 200 camp-sites and hook-ups is scheduled for completion.

Caption: At dusk, the Walker Landing Ferry, also known as the Howard Landing or Steamboat Slough Ferry, gliding from Solano County over to Grand Island, Sacramento County. The diesel-powered ferry is one of two ferries operating from Ryder Island, an island surrounded by Cashe, Miner, Sutter and Steamboat Sloughs. The steel-hulled J Mack was built at Fulton Shipyard in Antioch, and replaced other wooden-hulled ferries, such as Scooter and Tom D. The 62-foot long, California owned ferry can carry up to six cars, and transported the island's produce until a bridge was constructed across Miner Slough.

Davis, near the junction of Cache Slough and the Sacramento River, which was part of the Ulpinos grant. When the settlement was obliterated by rains, a common problem at that time, the residents moved further inland, higher in the Montezuma Hills. Since 1936, Rio Vista was discovered to have gas and is situated on the greatest gas field in Northern California. Caption: Bay Point Smelter. Among the largest and most important industries on the Coast is the Pacific Coast Smelting Works, located at Suisun Bay, about one mile from the two great railroads, the Southern Pacific a[nd] Santa Fe. It is the property of the Copper King mine, limited, Fresno County, Cal. Since the works went into commission last April they have doubled their capacity, and can now handle ov[er] 200 tons of ore per day with an increase capacity of 300 tons per day. They buy gold, silver and copper ore, the plant being fully equipped with sampling mills, ore roasting buildings, smelters a[nd] concentrators. The first bar was panned May 1, 1901. They use petroleum exclusively for generating and smelting. As it was the intention to go into the custom business generally and to use ore fr[om] the Copper King mine they established their works in their present location.
