    This artificial collection was started sometime shortly after the establishment of the San Francisco Maritime Museum to manage and arrange photographs acquired through gifts, purchases and duplication by the museum curatorial staff. The photographs were donated to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park by the National Martime Museum Association of San Francisco (formerly San Francisco Maritime Museum Association) in 1993.

    Collection Scope and Content

    This collection consists of photographs collected by San Francisco Martime Museum and added to the Olmsted classification scheme. It contains glass plates, film negatives, and photographic prints.
    This is an artificial collection created by the early San Francisco Maritime Museum and built up over 20 years by adding photographs from collections acquired by the museum until the late 1970s. Photographs were numbered consecutively and then filed by a classification scheme developed by the museum curator Roger Olmsted.

    Collection Arrangement

    Arranged by classification scheme.

    First Subdivision

    • Series 01 - A. San Francisco waterfront and city.
    • Series 02 - B. San Francisco Bay, except San Francisco -- including Oakland, Berkeley, etc.;. minor tributaries to the Bay, such as Petaluma Creek; and the Golden Gate.
    • Series 03 - C. Carquinez Straits and north; including Suisun and Sacramento (rivers?)
    • Series 04 - D. California coast south of San Francisco.
    • Series 05 - E. U.S. coast north of San Francisco, except for Puget Sound and the Columbia. River.
    • Series 06 - F. Puget Sound and Columbia River -- includes Astoria, Portland, Seattle, Port. Blakely, Port Townsend, and Bremerton.
    • Series 07 - G. Alaska and British Columbia.
    • Series 08 - H. Other ports on the Pacific, including Hawaii, Japan and Australia.
    • Series 09 - I. Ports other than Pacific.
    • Series 10 - J. At sea.
    • Series 11 - K. Unidentified location [formerly included documents (K10)].
    • Series 12 - L. Artifacts other than models.
    • Series 13 - M. Models.
    • Series 14 - N. United States, other than ports and coast -- interior US.
    • Series 15 - P. People -- used only where the people are the main and only focus of the image. (see P schedule.)
    • Series 16 - Q. Documents -- any printed or holographic material other than charts, plans, and. maps.
    • Series 17 - RR. Railroads.
    • Series 18 - S. Plans.
    • Series 19 - T. Charts and maps.
    • Series 20 - U. Vessel interiors (see U schedule.)
    • Series 21 - V. Details of vessels (see V schedule.)

    The letter classisfications are further subdivided by a number classification:

    • 1. Vessel or vessels alongside from stream, pier or another pier.
    • 2. [Formerly alongside from pier.]
    • 3. Vessel or vessels stranded, sinking, sunk, or in distress.
    • 4. [Formerly shipyard activity] See 16, 17, 18, 19.
    • 5. Vessel or vessels under tow or towing.
    • 6. Vessel or vessels anchored.
    • 7. Vessel or vessels underway.
    • 8. Vessel or vessels laid up (e.g. mothball fleet).
    • 9. Deck scenes. (Use for general deck scenes; has priority over V. schedule if more. than detail is shown.) See V schedule for details.
