    Biographical / Historical

Sir Clowdisley Shovell (1650-1707) and Sir George Rooke (1650-1709), were two British admirals who spent their naval careers in Channel and Mediterranean duties. Shovell served with Rooke on occasion, as in the 1696 attack on Calais, the aborted 1702 expedition to Cádiz, and the 1704 capture of Gibraltar.

    Scope and Contents

The collection consists of letters and documents containing instructions from the Admiralty to Shovell when he commanded the Channel Fleet in 1696, reports by Rooke of his preparations for the expedition to Cadiz, and miscellaneous routine naval business. Additional persons represented in the collection include: Sir William Bridgeman, Josiah Burchett, Sir Charles Hedges, and Sir Thomas Hopsonn.
