Biographical / historical:

George Miller, Jr. (January 7, 1914-January 1, 1969) served as a state senator from the 7th District of California from 1948 to 1969. The 7th district encompasses the East Bay east of the Berkeley Hills, from the western Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta in the north down to the Tri-Valley region in the south. Approximately 70% of the district lies within Contra Costa County and 14% within Alameda County. Miller was leader of the liberal wing of the California Democratic Party in the early 1950s when the Republican Party dominated state government. In 1953, Miller became a founding father of the California Democratic Council, the unofficial grassroots organization that helped bring the Democrats to power when Pat Brown was elected governor in 1958. Miller's son, George III, served as a United States representative from the same California district as his father.
