Abstract: The Gallegly (Elton W.) records contain correspondence, reports, bills, testimonies, memorandums, invoices, photographs, newspaper
clippings, retrotechnologies and other ephemera collected by the offices of Representative Elton Gallegly (1944- ) over his
twenty-six years of service to the House of Representatives for Ventura County (1987-2013). These records highlight core congressional
functions, meetings, votes and administrative operations.
Physical Location: Stored on-site at the Elton & Janice Gallegly Center for Public Service and Civic Engagement at Pearson Library. Available

Elton William Gallegly (born March 7, 1944) served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1987-2013 across thirteen congressional sessions (100th Congress through the 112th Congress) and three congressional districts: the
21st District, which covered the western San Fernando Valley and Southeastern Ventura County; the 23rd District, which covered
Ventura County and the city of Carpinteria; and the 24th District, which covered Ventura County and inland Santa Barbara county.
Gallegly began his political career with the Simi Valley City Council in 1979 and was Simi Valley’s first elected mayor, from 1980-1986. While in Congress, Representative Gallegly served as a member of the Committee on the Judiciary, as vice chair for the Committee
on Foreign Affairs and as co-chairman of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus as a vocal leader, among Congress, in
the fight against animal cruelty. During his tenure, Gallegly also helped to establish the Port of Hueneme, worked to expand
NATO legislation for European, Balkan and Baltic nations, supported efforts related to the Good Friday Accord that brought
peace to Northern Ireland and participated in the first hearings on the 9/11 Commission's recommendations. To date, Elton
Gallegly stands as Ventura County’s longest serving congressman, with 26 years of service within the House of Representatives.
The collection contains manuscripts, legislative publications, correspondence, reports, bills, testimonies, memorandums, invoices,
photographs, newspaper clippings, retrotechnologies and other ephemera collected by the offices of Representative Gallegly
over his twenty-six years of service to the House of Representatives (1987-2013). These files consist through administrative
functions, legislative issue functions, constituent correspondnece, publicity & media files, audiovisual materials, congressional
ephemera and printed materials.
