MS 641 contains correspondence, clippings and a photograph about the filming of "Union Pacific" in Nevada in 1939. In addition there are images of Southern Pacific equipment accidents and wrecks, the Sparks Nevada Roundhouse, Southern Pacific rolling stock and images of the 1939 derailment of the "City of San Francisco"

Phillip Edward Carroll (P. Ed Carroll) was born January 9, 1895 in San Francisco, California to P.P. and Annie [Reed] Carroll. He married Mamie Nina Austin on July 14, 1914 in Roseville, California. His 1917 WWI Draft registration states that he was a Car repairer for Southern Pacific Railroad in Roseville, California.
Carroll and Mamie had three children, Phillip Herman (1915-1990), Fredrick Joseph (1919-2006) and Clara Audrey (1927-1994). During WWII, Carroll was still employed with Southern Pacific and was living in Ogden, Utah. Carroll died in 1970 and is buried Roseville Public Cemetery District, Roseville, Placer County, California.
