Newspapers 469901 1813-1940 1914-1920

Processing Information

The newspapers are organized by title in alphabetical order and then by date in the case that there were numerous issues of one title. The original organization is only partly known, but may have been more thematic and generally chronological; however, alphabetical order by title and then chronological order within these divisions is often easier to search and just as easy to locate issues from important historical dates.

Scope and Contents

A major portion of Leo Jacobsohn's collection consisted of copies of newspapers, often those published on days of political and social relevance. Dr. Jacobsohn lived in Berlin during the period, so often the newspapers are local to the city. However, he also has editions from Danzig (his hometown) and those produced by World War I troops among his diverse collection.

Political Handbills, Ephemera, and Election Materials 469825 1889-1936 1914-1920

Scope and Contents

The second series is Political Handbills, Ephemera, and Election Materials. The series has then been subdivided into three subseries: organizational materials, political ephemera, and election materials. The majority of the material within these three subseries is ephemeral in nature; they are flyers, pamphlets, and other forms of temporary/short-term information about current events. Election materials are the most specific, pertaining to political activities during election campaigns. While the campaign dates vary depending on where the material is from, the main focus of this subseries is the 1919 elections. Maintained in their original folder divisions whenever possible, the materials about elections are split predominantly by party. Political ephemera, the second subseries, is more broad, encompassing particularly party politics regardless of a specific race. The ephemera is very wide-ranging in both subject and medium, and includes extensive amounts of handbills, notices, and cards. The materials here were separated first by type and then by theme/event. Lastly, the most general subseries is Organization Materials. This includes the same kinds of handbills and notices that were found in the other two subseries, but for organizations that were not directly "political" or engaged in the party/election system. This includes materials from charities and business associations as well as special governmental organizations. These are grouped by organization.

Organization materials 509120 1914-1935 1914-1919

Scope and Contents

As part of the series of Political Handbills, Ephemera, and Election Materials, Organizational Materials is perhaps the most general subseries. It includes print ephemera from a number of different groups that, while perhaps subscribing to political affiliations, were not official political parties; this might include groups that collected donations for different causes. The groups in this subseries could also be entirely unaffiliated, as with a painting school. Overall, included materials range from donation envelopes and letters to advertisements, as well as other forms of print ephemera.

[Painted Sperry Mills flour sack] undated

Scope and Contents

During World War I but prior to military involvement, the United States sent aid in other ways to the French, Belgian, and British troops and citizens. One initiative, put together by future President Herbert Hoover, known as the Commission for Relief in Belgium, sent sacks of flour to Belgium and parts of Northern France. In return, the citizens who received these sacks would then decorate them and send them back to America. Sometimes painted, other times embroidered, and even made into useful objects like pillows or jackets, they often included Belgian and American flags or other patriotic symbols.
This particular flour sack was originally from the Sperry Flour Co. in California (San Francisco). It was called "American Indian" Soft Wheat Flour, and it has been stamped "Secours aux prisonniers" [relief for prisoners], although not all the information on the stamp is legible. There are Belgian and American flags, but the rest of the painted design centers around illuminating and adding to the profile of a Native American (part of the original design of the flour sack). The artist has signed the bag, but the only legible part reads: "P. Jean Ve____."
