Background

Scope and content:

The collection includes over 160 rare photographs documenting documenting Huang's guerrilla operations and other political activities in China and Taiwan, as well as publications relating to Huang's life and experiences.

Biographical / historical:

Huang Pai-chi 黃百器 (Huang Baiqi) (1906-1982), also known as Huang Baimei 黃八妹 or Cuiyun 翠雲 was born in Shanghai, China. She became a guerrilla leader in 1937, in opposition to Japanese military forces. Subsequently, Nationalist Chinese intelligence authorities recruited her to organize underground forces in Japanese-occupied areas. After Japan's surrender in August 1945, Huang became a local legislator in Pinghu County, Zhejiang Province. In 1949, after the Communist takeover, she withdrew to islands off of the southeast China mainland. In the early 1950s, she became a leader in anti-Communist guerrilla warfare. After relocating to Taiwan in early 1955, she began working with the Chinese Women's Anti-Communist Anti-Russian Federation; this organization was founded by Chiang May-ling Soong 宋美齡 and eventually changed its title to the National Women's League of the Republic of China (Zhonghua Minguo fu nü lian he hui 中華民國婦女聯合會).
