These materials were compiled by William O. Hendrick, the Library Director for Sherman Library & Gardens. Hendricks was both
an organizer and participant in the symposia.
Biography/Administrative History
The first Baja California Symposium was held in Los Angeles, California in 1963. Inspired by Glen Dawson, the aim of the symposium
was to promote a better understanding of the state of Baja California through presentations highlighting its culture, history,
prehistory and future development. In 1965, the international organization, La Asociación Cultural de Las Californias, was
formed to advance the symposia. Symposia were held annually, alternated each year between locations in California and Mexico.
