Abstract: The H.K. Yuen collection features primary multimedia materials on a wide range of historic themes and events set in Berkeley and San Francisco Bay Area during the 1960’s and 1970’s, such as Civil Rights and Black Power, Community Movements, Counter Culture and International Communities, Ecology, Electoral Politics, International Support Organizations, The Left, The Right, Domestic “Third World” Politics, Student Movements, Women’s Movement, Labor, the United Farm Workers, Stop the Draft Week, the Free Speech Movement, Anti-Vietnam War Movement, the Third World College mobilizations at U.C. Berkeley, the student strikes at SFSU, the American Indian Movement, the San Francisco International Hotel mobilizations, the Black Panther Party, and many more. Among thousands of individuals who helped produced these historically important materials are some familiar names like Mario Savio, Ronald Reagan, Henry Fonda, and Bob Dylan. The highlight of this collection is its extensive series of audio content with an accumulative duration of more than 30,000 hours. Utilizing some of the earliest commercial reel-to-reel recording technology between 1964 and 1980, H.K. Yuen successfully preserved an oral history of countless rallies, protests, debates and meetings. In addition, the collection contains thousands of activist ephemera (e.g. flyers, posters, etc.) gathered between the 1960’s and 1980’s, as well as underground newspapers - most notably 98 issues of Black Panther Party’s newspaper from 1969-1971 that does not overlap with any other major collection.
