Abstract: Max Farrand was an American historian and first director of the Huntington Library from 1927 to 1941. This collection consists
of letters, manuscripts, documents, and a scrapbook, primarily related to Farrand's research from 1816 to 1947.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Gift of Max Farrand, 1936 and 1945.
Max Farrand was born in Newark, New Jersey, son of Samuel Ashbel Farrand and Louise Wilson Farrand. He graduated from Princeton
University, where he also received his Ph.D.; later he continued further graduate work in Leipzig and Heidelberg, and at Wesleyan
and Yale Universities. He became professor of history at Wesleyan; Stanford; Cornell; Harvard; and Yale Universities 1896
to 1925; Incorporator and Director of the Commonwealth Fund, 1918 to 1927; and Director of the Huntington Library from 1927
to 1941, remaining as Research Associate after 1941. He was also a Trustee of the California Institute of Technology from
1931; President of American Historical Society, 1940; Trustee of the American Academy in Rome; and member of a number of scholarly
and honorary societies and clubs. Farrand was married to Beatrix Cadwalader Jones, niece of Edith Wharton.
The Max Farrand papers consist of letters, manuscripts, documents, and one scrapbook from 1816 to 1947. Many of the pieces
are typewritten and photostatic copies of academic correspondence from and to historians and other scholars, Wesleyan; Stanford;
Cornell; and Yale Universities; Commonwealth Fund, 1918 to 1927; Huntington Library, 1927 to 1941; American Historical Society;
American Philosophical Society, etc. Included is primary source material for research in American history, particularly in
politics of the revolutionary and early federal periods. Also included are materials relating to the drafting of United States
Constitution and Benjamin Franklin and journals of travels in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and Maryland
at the beginning of the nineteenth century. There is also material relating to Mary Cadwalader Jones, Farrand's mother-in-law
and the author of Lantern slides (Boston, 1937). Also present are 16 Theodore Roosevelt letters to Max Farrand, see Box 15
for details.
