Background

Scope and content:

The Earl Ebi papers consists of material pertaining to his career in televison including a plaque, book, three scrapbooks, six magazines, correspondence, one blueprint, scripts, photographs and a silver/nickel cigarette lighter all dated between 1952-1972.

Biographical / historical:

Earl Ebi was born in Hollister, California on June 25, 1903. He began his acting career at the Pasadena Playhouse then moved his career to motion pictures and network radio before World War II. He worked for NBC in Detroit and Chicago and returned to Los Angeles in 1941 where he joined the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency as a radio producer.

He served as producer on the Edgar Bergen - Charlie McCarthy and Lux Radio Theater shows and moved into television with Lux Video Theater and Kraft TV Theater. In 1965 he became a member of the Leo Burnett television production staff. He retired as a producer in 1969, but turned again to acting in films and television with roles in such motion pictures as "Vanished," "The Chicago Teddy Bears" and "Incident on a Dark Street," and in the Mission Impossible and Jimmy Stewart television series.

He was serving his second term as president of the Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters when he died in Encino, California on January 24, 1973.

Custodial history:

This collection forms part of the American Radio Archives (ARA), which documents the early history of broadcasting, with an emphasis on California. The ARA was formerly housed at the Thousand Oaks Public Library and was owned and administered by the Thousand Oaks Library Foundation. It was transferred to the UCSB Library in 2021.
