- Biographical / historical:
-
Joseph Hurd Connell FAA (October 5, 1923–September 1, 2020) was an American ecologist and professor of biology, best known for his work studying tropical diversity. He completed a B.S. in Meteorology at the University of Chicago in 1946, followed by an M.A. in Zoology at the University of California, Berkeley in 1953, and a Ph.D. at the University of Glasgow, United Kingdom in 1956 under zoologist Charles Maurice Yonge. Immediately after graduating from the University of Glasgow, Connell participated in postdoctoral research at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Massachusetts for two years, after which he was hired as a Professor of Biology by the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). Connell remained active as an emeritus professor and researcher on campus at UCSB well after his official retirement in 1991.
Connell shifted his ecological work away from description and toward experimental research. His early research examined interspecies competition in Millport, Scotland and the San Juan Islands in Washington, which lay the groundwork for his long-term research in Australia, where he contributed to the development of the Connell–Slatyer model of ecological succession and the Janzen-Connell hypothesis on plant-species diversity in tropical forests.
In addition to teaching and research, Connell wrote several manuscripts, articles and reviews. His works have been cited almost 20,000 times, he won the Ecological Society of America's George Mercer and Eminent Ecologist awards, served as a corresponding member of the Australian Academy of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he twice received a Guggenheim Fellowship for research.
