Conditions Governing Access
Collection is open for research with the exception of audiovisual materials and digital materials. Audiovisual materials
in Cartons 5-6 and Box 1 are restricted due to the fragility of the original media. Analog audiovisual materials must be reformatted
before use. Digital materials are in process.

Biographical / Historical
Howard Besser is Professor Emeritus of Cinema Studies and Founding Director of the Moving Image Archiving and Preservation
masters degree program (MIAP) at New York University.
Besser grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and received his B.A. (media; 1976), his M.L.S. (1977), and his Ph.D. (Library
and Information Studies; 1988) all from the University of California, Berkeley. Besser also served on the faculties of the
UC Berkeley's School of Information Management and Systems, the University of Michigan's School of Information (where he headed
a committee developing a curriculum in multimedia and digital publishing). and the School of Library and Information Science
at the University of California, Los Angeles (1996-2004). besser also had a long-term affiliation with the UC Berkeley Multimedia
Research Center, and was on the Advisory Board for the UCB Art Technology, and Culture lecture series. His scholarly interests
include, among other topics, digital preservation, digital libraries, and the preservation of film and video.

Order of collection is as received from donor. Materials were refoldered and original folder titles were retained.
Content Description
Collection consists of papers and audiovisual materials. Among the papers are project files relating to Besser's work as well
as course materials from Besser's teaching on various topics in information and library technology and overhead materials
from Besser's talks. Also included are two cartons and one box of audiovisual materials (see container listing for details).
