This collection is comprised of a catalog book for the Bean Ballast Tamper - Parts Catalog, Machines SPO 1, 2, 3, 4. Oakland, California dated May 1, 1959. There is also a folder of (6) black and white photographs of Bean ballast tamper, SPO 2 + (6) color photographs of prototype scale model, on display in the Museum of Railroad History.

Biographical / historical:

Theodore Scofield Bean was born on May 19, 1904, in Huntington, Oregon to William S. and Katie Virginia [Mullany] Bean. He married Thelma Sylvia McCrac on Jun. 2, 1928, in Portland, Oregon. In 1930, Bean was employed as a signalman with a railroad in Oregon. At the time of his World War II draft registration, Bean was employed by the Southern Pacific Railroad Company in Oakland, Alameda County, California.

Bean was granted patent US2821935A on Feb. 4, 1958, for his ballast tamper machine.

Bean died on May 15, 1982, and is buried in the Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park in Hayward, Alameda County, California.
