Decatur (built 1921; destroyer: U.S. Navy) (DD-341) was launched at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in California on October
29, 1921.
Collection Scope and Content
The Decatur (built 1921; destroyer: U.S. Navy) photograph, 1926, (SAFR 24640, P15-013) is comprised of a photograph of the
United States Navy destroyer DECATUR underway and an accompanying newswire caption. The collection has been processed to the
Collection level and is open for use.
Contains one black-and-white photographic print, 5 x 7 in., of DECATUR (built 1921; destroyer: U.S. Navy) underway, view off
the starboard bow, 1926. Attached to the photograph is a newswire caption about the delivery of two surgeons to PRESIDENT
HARRISON (built 1921; passenger vessel) for a medical emergency in October 1926. The photograph was taken at an earlier date
by Pacific & Atlantic Photos, Inc.
The newswire caption reads: "Watch your credit. LA*11138 [38 is crossed out and 41 is handwritten in pencil] *Pacific & Atlantic*Los
Angeles / Destroyer wins 430-mile race with death. (Exclusive) / Successful in its 430-mile race with the life of a woman
at stake, the United States destroyer Decatur returned recently after taking two navy surgeons to the aid of a passenger on
the round-the-world liner President Harrison. The surgeons, Dr. D. G. Sutton and Carlton S. Andrus, both of the navy establishment
at San Diego immediately operated on the passenger, Mrs. Virginia Earle, with the aid of the ship's doctor. Radio dispatches
from the steamer said the patient was recovering and that the timely operation saved her life. This picture shows the United
States destroyer Decatur starting on its 430-mile race. / B PWFM 10/9/26"
