Description
The collection contains portraits of 91 gay men and lesbians who are literary figures, community activists, and performing artists. Some portraits were chosen on the basis of the subjects' connection to the San Francisco Bay Area.
Background
Robert Giard (1939-2002) was a photographer based in Amagansett, N.Y. He began photographing gay and lesbian literary figures in 1985. The archives of his project includes over 500 images, some of which have been exhibited at the San Francisco and New York Public Libraries and many other venues.
