Background

Scope and content:

In addition to a small amount of correspondence with Board of General Welfare personnel in Uruguay and the Mennonite Brethren Church in Montevideo before 1967, this subgroup contains individual correspondence files with missionaries and Uruguayan Mennonites, minutes, field visit report, financial records, leaflets, news releases, clippings and subject files relating to Missions/Services work in Uruguay. Some material is in Spanish.

Biographical / historical:

In 1967 Mennonite Brethren Missions & Services accepted responsibility for the work in Uruguay. From 1962 until 1966 the Mennonite Brethren Board of General Welfare and Public Relations had sponsored one couple in that country, and Missions/Services committed itself to continuing a Mennonite Brethren presence there after the merger of the two boards. Missionaries in Uruguay work both among the German-speaking Mennonites who immigrated there in the 1940s and 1950s from Poland, and among the Spanish-speaking people of that country.
