Scope and Contents
The Pediatric Pain Interviews Collection was created 2003-2007 by a UCLA interdisciplinary
team led by Professor Margaret C. Jacob and Dr. Marcia Meldrum of the UCLA Department of
History and Dr. Lonnie K. Zeltzer of the Department of Pediatrics in the David Geffen School
of Medicine at UCLA. Children aged 10-18 with chronic pain problems were interviewed prior
to being seen in Dr. Zeltzer's Pediatric Pain Clinic and again 6-12 months later. In about
half the cases, the mothers also were interviewed. The children and mothers discuss the
onset and course of the pain problem, the children's resulting difficulties with
functioning, their favorite activities, relationships with friends and family, the
children's and mothers' coping styles, experiences with doctors and treatments, and hopes
and expectations for the future. The study was supported by NIMH grant R01 MH 063779
(Margaret C. Jacob, principal investigator) and by a seed grant from the Mayday Fund. Tapes
and transcripts from those children and parents who consented are available to researchers.
Although all such tapes and transcripts are identified by study code number only, some
identifying names or other information may still be heard on the audiotapes and researchers
must agree not to copy any materials but to take notes only.
