Abstract: Richard Brock, an Orange County
folklorist, conducted the oral histories included in this collection in San Juan Capistrano
as part of his Master's degree in folklore and mythology at UCLA in 1975. The collection
contains oral histories from Delfina Manriquez de Olivares, Buenaventura Nieblas, and Paul
Arbiso (Nicknamed "Mocho" for a finger he lost in WWI. "Mocho" is reputed to be local
Acjachemen dialect for "missing"). The collection also includes audio recordings of the oral
histories, photographs, clippings, and other related material.

Richard Brock is an Attorney and Educator. He received a Bachelor's degree at UCI in
Classical Civilization focused on Greco-Roman History, Literature, Art, and Myth. He then
earned a Master's degree in Folklore and Mythology from UCLA and was focused on the folklore
of San Juan Capistrano where he did field work recording local folktales and history. In
addition, he studied law at Western State University of Law and became a practicing
attorney. He is currently teaching law in an ABA program for Paralegals at the University of
California at Riverside, and also teaches enrichment classes on Folklore and Mythology
through the Osher Program.
Collection Scope and Content Summary
Richard Brock, an Orange County folklorist, conducted the oral histories included in this
collection in San Juan Capistrano as part of his Master's degree in folklore and mythology
at UCLA in 1975. The collection contains oral histories from Delfina Manriquez de Olivares,
Buenaventura Nieblas, and Paul Arbiso (Nicknamed "Mocho" for a finger he lost in WWI.
"Mocho" is reputed to be local Acjachemen dialect for "missing"). The primary focus of oral
histories was folk art as found in hand-made funerary art of the mission cemeteries, and
surrounding areas. Interviewees discussed topics beyond this. The interviews will be of
interest to those interested in the Acjachemen tribe. The collection also includes audio
recordings of the oral histories, photographs, clippings, and other related material. The
oral histories were conducted in 1975; Supporting materials created on various dates

The collection includes: 3 cds of oral history audio recordings [original media is
restricted]; loose photographs; 4 mylar album sleeves of photographs and clippings; loose
clippings; 2 copies of Old Mission San Juan Capistrano map and guide brochures; and 1 copy
of Brock's master's paper titled "Folk Grave Markers in the San Juan Capistrano Mission
Cemetery."
