    Biographical / Historical

Aurelio de la Vega (1925-2022) was a Cuban-American composer, lecturer, and a key figure of the Los Angeles classical music community. De la Vega was born in Cuba in 1925, and studied law and diplomacy at his father's insistence, but was always interested in music. In 1947, De la Vega became the cultural attaché for the Cuban consulate in Los Angeles, and he studied with emigre composer Ernst Toch for several years. He returned to Cuba in 1949 and became chairman of the music department of the University of Oriente in Santiago de Cuba and music critic for the Havana journal Alerta. In 1959, after Castro's takeover of the Cuban government, De la Vega emigrated to Los Angeles. That fall, he started his tenure at Northridge, as director of its electronic music studio. He was a Distinguished Professor of Music, Director of the Electronic Music Studio and Composer-in-residence at California State University, Northridge from 1959 to 1992.
