Description
Records of the Terwilliger Nature Education Center (TNEC) and, partially, the Elizabeth Terwilliger Nature Education Foundation (ETNEF) and WildCare as collected by Joan Bekins, professional and personal acquaintance of TNEC founder Elizabeth Terwilliger. Includes administrative, Board of Directors, and program records documenting activities of TNEC, including its transition to WildCare. Also includes files relating to the Terwilliger Guild's efforts to fundraise for TNEC. A significant about of the collection documents the creation and promotion of educational films about Elizabeth Terwilliger and TNEC.
Background
Joan Linn Bekins is a macro-photographer of flowers and a naturalist from Marin County, California. She was friends with Marin County naturalist and educator Elizabeth Terwilliger (dates) and spread Terwilliger's teachings through the founding of the Terwilliger Nature Guides in 1970, which was a group of volunteer docents trained to lead field trips; the Elizabeth Terwilliger Nature Education Foundation in 1975, which provided children's nature programs (and later changed its name to the Elizabeth Terwilliger Nature Education Center), and the Terwilliger Guild, founded in 1984 to help raise funds for nature programs. The Elizabeth Terwilliger Nature Education Center later merged with the California Center for Wildlife to become WildCare, the San Rafael wildlife hospital and nature-education center. Bekins also produced films about Terwilliger.
