Five scrapbooks. Four of the five scrapbooks labeled "F," "G," "H," and "I") contain clippings about railroads in the United States. The clippings are from California papers (including the San Francisco Chronicle, the Stockton Independent, Oakland Evening Tribune, and the Los Angeles Journal), as well as papers in other states. The articles address many subjects pertaining to railroads, such as labor relations, questions of land ownership, legislation, and taxation. The Southern Pacific Railroad and the Central Pacific Railroad Company are mentioned often. The fifth scrapbook, labeled "Fiction," contains short stories, most of which are undated and do not list an author.
- Biographical / historical:

Rhode Island-born journalist who wrote for the New York Times and San Francisco Bulletin before becoming editor of the Los Angeles Evening Express and owner of the Los Angeles Star (1837-77). He became a press agent for the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1879.
