Background
- Scope and content:
-
The collection consists of AIDS-related journalism materials from the mid-1980s used as research for the KTLA news special AIDS: The Straight Story, hosted by Larry McCormick. Items include clippings, Telex printouts, fliers, brochures, press releases, and reports.
These research materials relate to the early stages of the AIDS epidemic between 1983 and 1986. Articles and news reports focused on gay bathhouses are included.
Articles, brochures, and Telex printouts include stories about theater and media representation of AIDS/HIV; and celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor and Joan Rivers raising money for research to find a cure.
Articles in the files grouped under "hysteria" show how misinformation spread, including questions as to whether infection could come from a kiss or touching a person with AIDS. Telex printouts and articles in the medical section of the files show the almost daily reports about research and treatment options.
A copy of the comic book "The Works: Drugs, Sex & AIDS" distributed for free by the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, is also included.
