Biographical / historical:

The Redstone Tenants Association, now known as the Redstone Labor Temple Association, was formed in September of 1999 to safeguard the building from development and preserve it as the home of numerous non-profit cultural, social service and activist organizations, small local businesses, and theaters.

Dedicated in 1914 by the San Francisco Labor Council Hall Associates as the San Francisco Labor Temple, the Redstone Labor Temple at 16th and Capp Streets brought San Francisco labor unions under one roof. Mortgage papers were burned on labor Day 1931. Also known as the Redstone Building, the structure is a registered landmark (number 238) with the City of San Francisco. Many 1934 General Strike meetings were held in the main auditorium. The lobby features 12 murals organized in 1997 by the Clarion Alley Mural Project.

In the late 1960s, the building was sold and it became a community center for activists and the arts including many Latinx service organizations. Since the technology boom of the 1990s, activitsts and grassroots organizations in the Mission District and citywide have been displaced due to gentrification. The Redstone Labor Temple tenants continue to fight to keep their spaces and remain in the community.
