This collection consists of two
extra-illustrated scrapbooks from 1750 to 1880 which were assembled by John Genest, an
English writer, clergyman and theater historian.
Background
John Genest (1764-1839) was an English writer, clergyman and theatre historian. Genest was
the son of John Genest of Dunker's Hill, Devon, England. The younger Genest attended
Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge. His works included Some Account of the
English Stage, from the Restoration in 1660 to 1830, 10 volumes, 1832. Genest passed away on
December 15, 1839.
